Liner Notes

I came across these very powerful words by Liz and asked if I could have a go. I hope I managed to do them justice.

Lyrics

Look Around You.. (Lyrics by Kahlo2023, music by myself)

C
look around you….
let me try my best to explain
everyone is different
no two people are
ever the same

look around you….
let me help you understand
our genders are diverse
it’s more complex than
woman or man

V1
there are multiple factors
that impact gender identities
such as environments, hormones
genetics, and neuropsychology

we can’t erase any letters
that makes such diversity erased
there’s no oppression, hierarchies,
policies or decisions
that can make genders go away

C
look around you….
let me try my best to explain
everyone is different
no two people are
ever the same

look around you….
let me help you understand
our genders are diverse
it’s more complex than
woman or man

V2
there are many influences
that help us become who we’re meant to be
some from biology, anatomy,
physiology, and psychosociology

we can’t rely on pages
of a third grade science book
there are intricacies and nuances
impacting gender identities
they’re not based on someone’s looks

C
look around you….
let me try my best to explain
everyone is different
no two people are
ever the same

look around you….
let me help you understand
our genders are diverse
it’s more complex than
woman or man

B/OUTRO
embrace your gender
be who you are meant to be
but don’t assume that
your gender definitions…
or lack thereof…
can define me

Feels particularly poignant given this article that hit my inbox today (tw: government transphobia: https://open.substack.com/pub/erininthemorn/p/anti-trans-headers-placed-on-websites?r=3vu4a&utm_medium=ios).

Thanks both for this song! 💜

Fine take on these lyrics.

Only the monotheistic religions insisted on the binomial - man / woman. Many other cultures (considered "primitive" by the self-confessed superior Christians or Muslims) had a much more fluid idea of gender.
