The Human Race

Liner Notes

This began a couple of weeks ago as an experiment in using Kontakt-based programmed guitars, but I eventually realised it wasn't quite working, so switched the old time-tested method of just recording, editing and patching together a thousand different takes... (You can tell it's a real guitar 'cause it's out of tune.)

And it's yet another song in the genre of 'I can't sing this without resorting to technology', so just imagine it's Mike Mills doing the high parts and Michael Stipe the lower.

My favourite part is probably the middle eight. If this song never makes it onto a proper album, I'm determined that middle eight will.

Drums: SD3 Stockholm
Bass: Epiphone viola bass through Tonex
Guitars: Danelectro '59 through Tonex
Synths: Minimonsta

Lyrics

of all the men in the world why'd it have to be you?
you had all the cash you could ever want
but it wasn't enough for you

we're living like neanderthals 'cause of what you did
you had all the cash you could ever want
but it wasn't enough for you

why is it so hard to look up at the moon
wonder just how we got up there

of all the rich pricks we hung
your neck was the reddest
you had all the goodwill in the world, but it wasn't enough for you

why is it so hard to look up at the sun
wonder just how we got up there

the human race was not one to win
the human race was not one to lose

of all the men in the world why'd it have to be you?
you had all the cash you could ever want
but it wasn't enough for you

why is it so hard to look back at the earth
wonder just how we got away from there

Cheers! I got the idea from a Paul McCartney/Wings track on Band on the Run, where it kinda switches back and forth from different parts of the album - except I did it with parts of the same song, copy and pasting around.

Love that bridge! That's a cool chorus as well. The lyrics of the last one being in space is great.

Definitely getting the REM vibe. Your vocals work really well with this though. Nice harmonies. Hearing a bit of JDBs Even in Exile as well. Great tune
