Something's Gotta Give

Liner Notes

I've been stuck on these two themes for the last week and a bit. They were intended to be part of a larger song, potentially another fairy tale style song, similar to my song The Setting Sun. However, I've been completely stuck and feel like this is blocking writing other songs. So I decided to just get it out of the way in hopes that I can move on to more songs.

Turns out the melody of the A section is pretty much the exact same as a previous song of mine, Crosseyed and Terrified so... maybe this is a new version of that song? A spiritual successor? Just two songs with the main section in common?

I asked my wife what genre this is and she said Prog Swing? My brother said more like Post Rock but I don't feel that much. Maybe some sort of jazz fusion?

Whatever genre it is, it's a fun listen. I'd probably just say it's jazz and have done with it. After all, the big-band-sounding bit in Rush's "La Villa Strangiato" was actually a direct lift of a 1937 jazz standard by Raymond Scott called "Powerhouse"...

Guitar work on this is fantastic!

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, this tune with any genre label would sound as neat. Did you get to the build-your-own-genre bar? SDG = Self-Defined Genre. Labels can be hard but are apparently necessary.

Really enjoyed listening to this! You're immensely talented.

As you know I'm all in for weird genres! It's hard to put that into boxes. I'd say you have some jazzy prog or fusion going on.

What kind of scale is that in the beginning? Phrygian? And then it gets happy? Interesting musical themes definitely.
