The Way It Goes

Liner Notes
As an exercise (and probably because my wife and I saw Sting/Billy Joel in concert last week) I wrote a song in the style of Billy Joel. I'd forgotten he already has a song called "And So It Goes," which is fine, because this is a mediocre B-side at best. It was an interesting exercise, though.
Lyrics
Another night lost to the alarm clock, another day of working and stress,
Another stretch of surviving the dream, it’s better that the flip side, I guess.
You watch the feast, day after day, and still you’re scrabbling over the crumbs.
You save ‘em up, put em away for a someday that’ll never come.
That's just the way it goes, the wind blows, the river flows,
Some nights are diamonds, some days you never know.
Won’t know the ending til the story, it unfolds,
But that's just the way it goes.
Met a girl just the other night, a pensive smile, a spark in her eyes
Told her all of my troubling thoughts. She just looked surprised.
She said, "Don't you worry, darlin’. Things’ll get better, you'll see.
And even then, they’ll get awful again. How and when is the mystery
For someone like you and me…”
That's just the way it goes, the wind blows, the river flows,
Some nights are diamonds, some days you never know.
Won’t know the ending til the story, it unfolds,
But that's just the way it goes.
We’ll dance this dance again tomorrow.
We’ll fight this fight again next year.
Each day, new joy, new pain, new sorrow.
But somehow we’ll still find ourselves back here.
That's just the way it goes, the wind blows, the river flows,
Some nights are diamonds, some days you never know.
Won’t know the ending til the story, it unfolds,
But that's just the way it goes.
