Just When You Thought It Was Safe

The song emerged from the verse riff and progressed from there, it’s probably a bit high for me to sing, learning it as we went along. I think the first verse has a different voicing to the second voice which isn’t ideal.

The story I was working with was of someone hesitant to leave their comfortable home. They have a dream that someone is destroying their house from the inside and forcing them outside.

Thoughts and feelings from the recent horror film The Heretic were on my mind - not directly influencing, but lurking in the background, gently stroking the path of the song.

Lyrics

You sit inside and spend the whole day trying to find your way outside
Through your door the sounds implore you to explore
A timid roar heard from the top floor

Your nails dig deeper into the plush interior
you chose from the store
A calm sensation
As noise from the station
Shakes the ground around
Foundations found

Clouds here
Parted
The night never started
Hang your coat
On a golden rope
That Means you could never leave

When the walls come caving in
It’s not the words your missing
It’s the sky you’re kissing at last
When the walls come caving in
It’s not the sky that’s falling
Not the sky that’s falling in on you

Sift through the wreckage
Searching for a message
help it all make sense
Your neighbours stressing
That without their blessing
shared the whole contents
Of your open essence,

Clip your
Own wings
The day it is starting
Our lives are made
From an unread page
The innocence of thieves

When the walls come caving in
It’s not the words your missing
It’s the sky you’re kissing at last
When the walls come caving in
It’s not the sky that’s falling
Not the sky that’s falling in on you

Just when you thought it was safe to invite another
Just when you thought it was safe

Sometimes you just gotta fuzz things up a bit, and that fuzzy guitar part is great. The vocal’s great, the chorus is super catchy, and the bass line is awesome. It feels complete. Do you like suggestions on things? Some people do, some not so much; your bio says maybe you do..? If you do I had one suggestion and if you don’t, ignore me or tell me and I’ll delete it. The last two lines in the chorus would make the narrative arc of the song more satisfying (to me) if you didn’t repeat the same premise. The through line of the chorus is awesome and really encapsulates the premise of the song, but if the penultimate line was a thing that isn’t the sky but feels like it, possibly a more physical thing like the walls were, the pay-off in the last line would punch harder. Probably just me though, so ignore this, but I mention it, in case it’s useful.

Oh I love this! Your vocals are great and what an interesting mix of textures with the arrangement. I really like the shift at the bridge. I’d add it to my playlist if I could!

This is a cool song! Happy Fawming!

Great melodies throughout. Really like the changes between sections... the strummy verses into the chug chug of the prechorus and then the bridge is a nice change up. Excellent song

Really sweet riff and general guitar sound - the mix of clean and fuzzy sounds lush. Stuffed with hooks and the lyrics are compelling, really need to catch up with Heretic as I keep hearing good things!

Really really good mate! This is one of those rare finds on fawm where it sounds so polished and finished. I love this song. I would buy this album.
