Liner Notes

This piece shows you what kind of nerd I am :)

An idea I had in my head for a few fawms, and I finally did it (at least, enough to move on to other ideas): A piece in the style of Perotin, a Parisian composer who lived around 1200. I have a counterpoint textbook that actually starts with his works. While I was working on this, I found out that it's surprisingly hard to shed my modern-day sensibilities and years upon years of harmony classes – because medieval music follows different rules!
(If I ever revise this thing, I would definitely add some more crunchy dissonances in well-chosen places.)

Another modern idea: I used SSAA voices for this piece (so I could maybe, if I wanted, theoretically, sing all parts myself) instead of the alto/tenor range that would have been used in medieval times (because women weren't supposed to sing in church, and the works of Perotin that we know today are all Christian sacred music).

I decided it would be too time-consuming to record it, so the audio export from MuseScore will have to do. If you're interested, I can link my score tomorrow; now I'm tired and need to go to sleep.

Absolutely fascinating! I remember so well when I learned about Leonin and Perotin in a mediaeval music class. You've captured his style perfectly.
