Liner Notes

So, I woke up with the words "illucid dreaming" in my head. That is, the opposite of lucid dreaming. It might've been there because I saw a question about lucid dreaming on a quiz show the other day.

Anyway, I wanted to write something with that title, but wasn't sure where to go with it. Then I thought about other times I've been disappointed by a lack of cool stuff happening, and came upon the desire for a refund.

Once I had the title, the lyrics were easy.

If anybody wants to music-ify this, be my guest. I probably won't get around to it during FAWM. I hear it as pop-rock.

Enjoy!

Lyrics

"I'd Like a Refund (Illucid Dreaming)"

I took acid,
maybe four or five times,
hoping to see some cool shit,
the reward for my crimes,
but all that happened,
every time,
was I'd sit and think,
and think and think,
then forget what the topic was and sober up.

I'd like a re-fund,
mister drug dealer,
those tabs were fucking broken,
mister spirit healer.
I'd like a re-fund,
I didn't see shit.

I read about lucid dreaming
in a book on witchcraft scheming,
where you become aware you are asleep
and can control your dreams so deep.
A few times, I realised my sleeping nature,
and got so excited I instantly woke up.
Fuck.

I'd like a re-fund,
miss witchcraft writer,
lucid dreaming was disappointing,
miss magic fighter.
I'd like a re-fund,
I didn't do shit.

You see, dear listener,
ever since I was a child
I wanted magic to be real
because magical combat in movies looked so fucking fun.
Magic IS real,
I know that now,
but I still haven't ever experienced anything really fucking cool,
so I'd like a reeeeeeee-fuuuuuund!

That's right, deities,
I wanted magic to be really bloody cool,
but instead it's been boring
and doctors say I have schizoaffective disorrrrrrdeeeeer.
I hear things every daaaay,
under constant psychic attaaaack,
please just throw a fucking fireball occasionally, would that be so hard, huh?

I'd like a re-fund,
mister drug dealer,
miss witchcraft writer,
the gods themselves.
I'd like a re-fund,
whoever made the Matrix that I'm living in.
But even more than a re-fund,
I'd like for something actually interesting to happen occasionally. I'm fucking dying here.

Please?

The cool shit always happens when you aren't expecting it, but are paying attention. And it's always so random as to be utterly annoying. For me, the voices turned out to be ghosts--but I didn't think they were real until my gran died. After that, the training wheels came off--I saw a sea serpent the day after the election. Me and 5 random strangers. True story. I'm not sure why some people see things and others don't. Maybe it's a perception filter? The old lady who saw the serpent went straight to thinking it was the military, which made the rest of us absolutely slack-jawed because that is SUCH a cliche' to think!

I'm a lucid dreamer, always kind of have been. The downsides are 1. Unlike many other people with aphantasia, I can't see anything in my head even in my dreams and 2. I have to come up with everything that's happening in my dreams myself, they rarely surprise me. So this is relatable in a same-but-opposite kind of way.

Fully relatable lyrics. None of the cool shit works (see also ghosts). So many good lines in this it'll make a brilliant song. Hoping someone picks it up soon!

Oh, this is gold. I don't even know what to say... hit pretty close to home a few times there. I don't even know how one would musicify this... it needs to be animated with smell-o-vision.

Oh, these are excellent lyrics! They instantly pulled me into the narrator's perspective and painted such an evocative picture.
