Rust And Rain

by @daveyboy103

Liner Notes

I spent some time a while back creating my family tree and what jumps out at you, more than anything else, is the way that time just rolls over you and you end up as a node in a tree.

You had loves, cares, worries, dream the whole enchilada but still, in the end, you are a node in a tree and time rolls right over you.

This song is a little bleak and I find it hard to expunge the bleakness as I get older. On the plus side getting older is better than the alternative, not getting any older, so I will comfort myself with that.

Lyrics

All that I am and all that I say
One of these days will be washed away
As if I had never been
Nothing left but the cardinal sin

The rust and the rain wears it all away
No matter how solid it seems in the day
And nothing will matter, cos nothing ever did
We all end up as a dead end kid

Chorus

Tossed by the rust and the rain
Why doesn’t everything just stay the same
Why do I have to change?
The passing of time just seems so strange (2)

All that I am
All that I say
All that I am
All that I say

No illusions about what’s in store
I was nothing forever and I’ll be nothing once more
The lifespan of man is just a blink of the eye
We’re born, we live, we cry, we die

The rust and the rain wears it all away
No matter how solid it may seem in the day
And nothing will matter, cos nothing ever did
We all end up as a heartbreak kid

Chorus

Tossed by the rust and the rain
Why doesn’t everything just stay the same
Why do I have to change?
The passing of time just seems so strange (2)

This is a really cool song. Lots going on with that kick drum!

I like the non traditional production of this song style. It made this way more interesting.

Rad song. The drummer has some really fun double kicks in there. Good arrangement, great vocal processing. The bass keeps it driving, and the whole thing has an air of anxiety over it. Wonderful lyrics and delivery.

Confronting isn't it? Creating a family tree. I know what you mean and this song doesn't beat around the bush. Great 80's The Church-like feeling.

The "dead end kid / heartbreak kid" lines are so effortlessly cool. I could say that for the entire song really. Other favorite line is: "I was nothing forever and I’ll be nothing once more"

Perfect 80's sound and style. Made me once again want to go back.
Great work with the guitars and how they helt together with the synth.
Thanks 🙏

Very powerful and instantly likable song. Love the title also. Amazing to listen to.

I love the directness in both lyrics and music. Rust and rain are a strong metaphor for this idea.

of your many styles, this is the ne i love the most, big heart vocals dominating a slick arrangement featuring exciting an innovative guitar work. big choruses that remain in your head long after the song is over. and themes that are provocative, sometimes controversial, that others would either shy away from or avoid them altogether because they require too much brain work.

Hitting me in the feels with this...it becomes more stark as we get older. As Warren Zevon once said...enjoy every sandwich. Love the vocal layers you've got going on.
