Liner Notes

When I was growing up, my #queer uncle was kept at a slight distance from the children. On rare occasions, he would come by, telling stories and just being sweet and kind. I miss him; wish he knew the real me. But perhaps he did.

Heard him in someone's voice recently, which inspired this.

Wrote this in Db, which is not my typical composition key. Something about that range was speaking to me while I was in the flow.

Lyrics

Never Told You
Jemma Kline

Did I hear your voice today?
Did I hear you say hello?
Almost thought I saw your face,
Though I lost you long ago.

I never told you,
Never knew to say,
That I was like you,
Never said my name.

Did you try to tell me then?
Did you try to warn somehow,
That the world wasn’t safe,
That they always tear us down?

I never told you,
Never knew to say,
That I was like you,
Never said my name.

Each made up story, gentle greeting,
Awkward silence, welcome meeting,
Was your way of telling me I was like you.
Because you knew.

I never told you,
Never knew to say,
That I was like you,
Never said my name.
I wish you knew my name.

Hi Jemma! I came here to thank you for your kind comment on my song, “Signs.” We are definitely on the same plane with this one! A song is such a beautiful way to connect with loved ones whether they’re still here with us or not. Just singing the words makes them feel present. Your song really touched my heart. It’s so pure and I’m sure your uncle would be smiling to know you felt this way.

How sad that you weren’t then both free to talk openly about who you really were. I guess he’s gone now but maybe someone hearing this will hold the conversation with a young relative.

A beautiful song Jemma, and appreciated by the many uncles and aunts isolated from families because of differences. Just a guess, but I suspect your uncle knew.

The story is really compelling. Your experience of hearing someone you knew and loved within someone else (or yourself) is familiar. There are a couple sequences of chords that are really moving, for example, the chords that underpin the lyric “meeting”.
