Cicada Jazz
Liner Notes
I'd like to thank the thousands of backup singers who made this possible. I recorded this summer's 17 year cicadas with the idea that I would write a cicada song now. Some birds also contributed; they get their royalties in birdseed.
As usual, I am compelled to impart some natural history facts along with my music. Scientists figured out how the cicadas know when to emerge--they count the number of times a tree's sap slows (in winter) and speeds up (in spring). They used an artificial tree to fake the changes and fool the cicadas into emerging early.

Lyrics
Cicada Jazz
Seventeen years livin’ underground
Sippin’ sap and hangin’ around
Countin’ down by the ebb and flow
Until it’s time to go, go , go
Climb up trees, fling off old clothes
Red eyes shining, striking a pose
Better hurry and find a new mate
Only got a few weeks before it’s too late
A-eee-ya the guys all sing
A-eee-ya the ladies click click
Look out now, they’re all over the yard
Never seen an insect party so hard
