What's the Meaning of This? (A Summer Song)

I saw this skirmish a while back. As it happens, I went camping by a little mountain river and actually saw a pair of sticks float by, crossed like an X. How perfect, I thought, X may mark the spot, but the spot is always in flux. The title is from a book I read along time ago about the meaning of indexical pronouns and such, words whose meaning is totally dependent on context, words like 'this'. I might come back to this. I actually wanted to respect the skirmish time limit, but I have some ideas :)

Lyrics

What’s the point of this song
What does it mean to sing 'this' in a song
When it’s gone
What’s the point of this song?
What does it mean?
Who’s asking?
Why are we here at this point?

I wrote a summer song, a summer song
But summer’s gone
This is a summer song, a summer song
But summer’s gone

I stepped into some riffles
I saw a pair of sticks
Floating down the river
I guess that was it
X marked the spot
That summer was hot
But summer’s gone
X marked the spot
That summer was hot
But summer’s gone

What’s the point of this song
What does it mean to sing this in a song
When it’s gone
What’s the point of this song?
What does it mean?
Who’s asking?
Why are we here at this point?

You’ll be here tomorrow
Where that pair of sticks
Floated down this river
I guess this is it
I wrote a summer song, a summer song
But summer’s gone
This is a summer song, a summer song
But summer’s gone

Really lovely tune with a touching melancholy atmosphere. "This is a summer song, a summer song, but summer’s gone" is such a great verse! The whole song really captures that end-of-summer nostalgic feeling. One of your best this year!

you may as well ask, "what is the point of summer when summer is gone." maybe the purpose of a summer song is to reassure those in the midst of winter than summer will return. its a lovely song, and the question can pertain to almost any transitory feeling or event.

It makes me think of John Darnielle/Mountain Goats…
Very melancholic and beautiful

@sbs
Brilliant! I was going to say a whole bunch of stuff about camping but I’ll just say I smile when you mention it, remembering my time in Oregon.
