The Death of an Eternal

Liner Notes

#acoustic #live take video
I was really moved by the spiritual, mythological elements of Bill's lyric and its overall artistry. But of course that's the case with all his writing. I saw he had done his own musical version but I implored him to let me try a complete reimagining of it and he generously agreed. I've only ever posted a live video take of something once before, so still getting the hang of all that. Please forgive the flubs and rough quality.

Lyrics

The Death of an Eternal
Lyrics - Bill White, Music - Jeff Walker

When the stone was placed, where did I go?
Was the birth of wonder the end of woe?
Am I brother to the earth or sister to the stars?
Are these tales of the past or future memoirs?

An angel laughs, a devil sighs
After all these years, I am human again
And I must die

Etching history in obscure encryption
Through centuries of moral affliction
I’ve carried the weight of the albatross
From the red-stained caves to the sign of the cross

An angel laughs, a devil sighs
After all these years, I am human again
And I must die

My neck has been broken
I’ve been burned at the stake
At times I deserved it
Other times, it was a mistake

An angel laughs, a devil sighs
After all these years, I am human again
And I must die

Nice take on the song. I had commented on the original and Bill posted on my page about the red-stained caves to the sign of the cross, a line which I enjoy, and I will say it comes through.

Really like the treatment of the chord on the line "And I must die", and the delivery is great.

I had the pleasure of watching Jeff perform another song over zoom and really digging his approach and tone.

Wow, this sonic styling hit me right in the feels. The key, the tempo, the way the vocals float in the verses and sink down low in the choruses, all intensify the mood of Bill's mysterious and mournful words.

Oh, wow--one of Bill's songs that I commented on earlier (mentioning that I hoped others would "cover" it) and along comes one of my favorite vocalists, Jeff Walker, (who I still think should team up with me and we go on the road as "Jerry/Jeff Walker") and covers it--and I get to see him perform it! LOVE IT!! ❤️

Beautiful rendition. Just great. There’s something about this song that resonates with me also. Love it and what you did with it! And a nice video to boot!

Quite a Western vibe. Have been watching a few recently and this would fit right in with any of those. Well done!

Well that was an interesting song style from you Jeff. Bill and your lyrics paint a vivid image. As for the video and playing I didn't notice anything as I was captivated by the vocals and lyrics....always a sign of a great performance ! well done

thank you jeff, for a fabulous re-imagining. it is very true to the original, in fact, had i recorded it on a better day, it may have sounded very similar to this. you got every nuance right, but with a gentler and more compassionate tone. overall. this is a much better rendering than i gave it.
