Liner Notes

Simon wrote some touching and sensitive lyrics about someone losing the real world to dementia. It was my hope to create music sensitive enough to match Simon's lyrics.

When I caught up with other songs on my plate, I discovered that Corey (@songwritingzen) had beat me to it. I still wanted to try my luck and both Corey and Simon gave me the needed permission to create a second version of the song. Thanks, lads!

I hope you will take Corey's version for a spin, too.

Simon: Thanks so much Paul for giving me a 2nd beautiful version of this song to listen to! These kind of moments are part of the real beauty of the 50 90 community

Lyrics

A darkness closes in
A veil falls, bringing night
Like a fog of war, descending
And there's no way to win this fight

(Chorus)
Gone but not gone
Hanging on
A face that evokes memories,
Gone but not gone
Hanging on
Just a pretense of reveries

(Verse 2)
Each small death brings heartbreak
A life lived, breaking down
Like a battlefield, limbs severed
There's no way not to hit the ground

(Chorus)
Gone but not gone
Hanging on
A face that evokes memories,
Gone but not gone
Hanging on
Just a pretense of reveries

(Bridge)
I wish for peace for you
And also for me
I see and I cry
For what you cannot perceive

(Chorus)
Gone but not gone
Hanging on
A face that evokes memories,
Gone but not gone
Hanging on
Just a pretense of reveries

Very moving lyric, and the setting is very apt and well-suited to the song. Nice melody and vocal, and the instrumentation sets the mood nicely. Depressing topic, of course, and there's no blinking at the tragedy here, so the bridge with the wish for peace is a needed lift.
