Mosh Pit

Liner Notes

This was written in a mentoring session with my mentor Rhys Renwick at my music course Wild at Heart Community Arts. This was recorded on my phone on the 4th of September 2024.

The impetus for this song came from when I went to see TISM (This Is Serious Mum) at the Pier Hotel in Frankston in February 2024. During the song "I'll 'Ave Ya!" the crowd were moshing, with there being a giant mosh pit near the front of the stage. As a result, bodies were slamming into me and I was feeling disconcerted and nervous.

At different points in the evening, two of the band members also stage dove (along with members of the audience crowd surfing) and consequently had their balaclavas ripped off, unmasking them. When they returned to the stage, naturally their roadies supplied them with new balaclavas.

This song was written about the hectic experience.

Edward Roussac - electric piano, lead vocals
Rhys Renwick - electric guitar, backing vocals

Lyrics

The music's loud and obnoxious
Bodies slamming into me
Everybody's getting raucous
You smell like a bin

Mosh pit
Mosh pit

Sweat is in the air
I hate it in this place
Crowd surfing everywhere
I just took a boot to my face

Mosh pit
Mosh pit

I just saw the band get their head ripped off
It's a g0ddamn bloodbath in here
I don't understand why these punks kick off
There's loud ringing in my ear

Mosh pit
Mosh pit

No more moshing, I'm sick of it
Take your kicky punchy outside
No more moshing in the pit
My message spreading far and wide

Mosh pit
Mosh pit
Mosh pit
Mosh pit

Oh, yeah. Don’t guess I’d be up for it now, but there was something about that ecstatic energy when I was 20. I went to hear Big Audio Dynamite II not realizing they were a reincarnation of the Clash and got separated from at least one of my shoes in the swarm of moshing. This song captures more of how I think I’d feel about it now. Intrigued but a little overwhelmed. It really feels like I’m there.
