A fellow Muser who goes by Big Happy Jack seems to constantly come up with creative and highly singable lyrics, but never seems to partner up with a musician, so when I saw this one I really liked today, I talked him into letting me give it a go. Made me think of Huckleberry Finn and reminded me of a Pulitzer nominated book I intend to read called “James” that’s come out recently. It’s a reimagining of that classic told from the POV of his cohort, Jim, a runaway slave.
Lyrics
River King
Lyrics - Big Happy Jack
Music - Jeff Walker and BIAB
Which way do I go, I need a minute
What things did I know before I stepped in it
Which way is the best so I can get home
Please point out the water and leave me alone
c
It seems like every day I’ve got something to decide
They say a nudge can move a comet flying through the sky
I study all the options and do the wrong thing
It’s in my blood, I’m a river king
A long cane pole and a coffee can
And me just waiting to become a man
I’m talking to turtles and baiting a hook
Feeling a world that’s not in a book
I sit on a float and go for a ride
A soft current distance, then pull to the side
It’s quiet and cool under big oak and birch
An echoing laugh in my private church
c
It seems like every day I’ve got something to decide
They say a nudge can move a comet flying through the sky
I study all the options and do the wrong thing
It’s in my blood, I’m a river king
It all goes away on the black muddy shore
All troubles and trials don’t matter no more
I award the earth with all I can give her
And spend my days on the banks of the river
I study all the options and do the wrong thing
It’s in my blood, I’m a river king
