“Where We’re Not” - #fawm 50/90 2024 song 43

I’ve been traveling and I can’t wait to be home and to catch up on songs and comments and listening! Recorded this one on the road.

Here’s another lyrics-only draft from last summer I finished with chords and a melody. I think the prompt was about a Time Machine — would you go to the future or the past? Quick and dirty demo for today — I can hear a few things I want to change.

9 lyric drafts left to finish from 2023…

Lyrics

I keep my time machine so clean
I'm playing keep-away with time
I've run it through the carwash
But I refuse to get inside

I close my eyes: I'm visiting the future
Not sure if you're there
I blink 'em twice: I'm in the past
And I don't see you anywhere

Holy cow, we're only now!
Now is all we've got
If systems fail with bleeps and bloops
We'll end up where we're not

I'll paint my time machine reflective
Like mirrors ought to be
I'll bring you round for polishing
Bring you round for tea

PRECHORUS

Holy cow, we're only now!
Now is all we've got
No two steps forward, no, nor back
We'll end up where we're not

Why's my where's my how's my time machine?
Why's my where's my how's my time machine?
REPEAT BRIDGE

I don't take pictures anymore
I heard they let our minds forget
I give myself a quiz each week
To see if we have split up yet

PRECHORUS

Holy cow, we're only now!
Now is all we've got
You said, "Babe, people change."
We'll end up where we're not

This is really well constructed, and your delivery makes it even better. Lots of awesome lines - I think my favorite image is "playing keep-away with time." It's such a poignant concept, that someone could effectively bottle it up for later and hold onto it because they have a time machine. But yeah, it would cause me more anxiety than anything to be able to go back or go forward. I really like this musical meditation on relationships over time.

What an interesting take on a time machine! The quiz is brilliant.

Ah, it's good to be back. I wasn't on the road like you, but I was making music and didn't want to post here while I didn't have time to listen to FAWM friends' songs. Anyway, I am back and had to come listen to you singing with the uke. It's comforting, reassuring to listen to your music, like everything is gonna be alright.

this verse in particular struck me deep emotionally....
I close my eyes: I'm visiting the future
Not sure if you're there
I blink 'em twice: I'm in the past
And I don't see you anywhere

you captured the true tragedy of time in that verse. the now is all we got is, i suppose, intended as a positive statement, but for me, the now is the saddest part of the story, it is the moment that is lost even as it is experienced, as it can never be found again, either in the past or the future.

Nice message - I like the "now is all we've got" and the "paint my time machine reflective" and the suggestion that we do sort of have ways of visiting the future and past - and the music works well for it.
