Liner Notes

#acoustic
In the skirmish I wrote only verse 1 and chorus. I added the rest five hours later.
The song is about the way crowding out is affecting people, in particular, reducing romantic impulses and tendencies. This, I believe, is the main cause of declining birth rates globally in the last two years or so. The song makes its case through mood but alludes to the relevant theories of economics and ecology.

Lyrics

It used to be that
If you had something to say
The world had a place for you
You could travel the world
And you could find your way
You could choose the work that you do
That was 2022
If you want to drive on the street
If you want to sit at a desk
There’s no help for you anymore
So much of life
Feels like a march to our death
And no one is keeping score
Welcome to 2024

You might be thinking of 2022
When the world was working for you
It’s not that way anymore
There is no going back
Only facing the fact
This is 2024

Imagine the obstacles that
People will face
If they start their lives
No relief from running
To find a place
Always dressed to survive
Born in 2025
So why search for love
If it might lead to this
The old rules don’t work anymore
It is a very hard case
To take a chance on a kiss
While you’re dodging bombs in the war
Of 2024

You might be thinking of 2022
When the world was working for you
(It’s not that way)
It’s not that way anymore
There is no going back
Only facing the fact
(The fact)
This is 2024

We’ve been crowded out
Of our home towns
Homesick and feeling blue
There were places to go
But even then people asked
What the world was coming to
In 1932
Even now people say
That there must be a way
To live your life and be free
People want to forget
That party went away
For people like you and me
In 2023

You might be thinking of 2022
When the world was working for you
(It’s not that way)
It’s not that way anymore
There is no going back
Only facing the fact
(The fact)
This is 2024

@berni1954 @joeycyclone I have expanded “That Was 2022” with two more verses.

I like the change to the major at the start of the chorus, where the melody seems quite hopeful, but we go back to the minor key for the reality check.
Great skirmish, hope you get a chance to develop further

This has a Bowie like feel to it. I think it is worth developing.
Let me know if you do.

It was ever thus. A nice fragment sung from the heart. Great skirmishing!
