Liner Notes

I don't know why I was thinking of Halley's Comet the other day, but I was, and it occurred to me that it must be close to half way around the sun by now. So here's a #ukulele #folk song about it, with a few other instruments. I'd add percussion but I have to go out... #fuc

I suppose when you only see the planet every 80 years or so, you might have a different perspective, and whatever is going on, you'll only see progress. I have decided that it is an optimistic little comet, despite everything.

Lyrics

[G][Em][C][D]
[G][C][D]

The [G]last time that I [Em]saw them it was [C]not a pretty [D]sight
[G]Fallout and [Em]scandals, and the [C]customary [D]fights
[C]Even I could [D]tell you that was [B7]not the hand of [Em]God
[C]I could barely [D]watch

They [G]sent a crew to [Em]meet me, but they [C]never made it [D]home
Now I [G]travel through the [Em]blackness, [C]decades on my [D]own
I've [C]gone as far as [D]I can go, it's [B7]time that I re[Em]turned
[C]To see what the Earthlings have [D]learned

I [C]hope it's going [G]well, and I [C]hope they're having [G]fun
I look [C]forward to my [G]visit when it's [Em]206[D]1
I [C]wonder what has [D]happened, what [G]humankind has [Em]done
While I'm [C]half way a[Cm]round the [G]Sun

[G][Em][C][D]
[G][C][D]

They [G]thought I was an [Em]omen when they [C]saw me over[D]head
I [G]filled the Anglo [Em]Saxons with a [C]sense of fear and [D]dread
[C]Witnessing the [D]battle, like each [B7]time before and [Em]since
[C]Wondering who really [D]wins

But [G]every time I [Em]come around, I [C]see the steps they [D]made
[G]Maybe there is [Em]hope and there's [C]no need to be a[D]fraid
So it's [C]time that I went [D]back again for [B7]just another [Em]try
A my[C]sterious light in the [D]sky

I [C]hope it's going [G]well, and I [C]hope they're having [G]fun
I look [C]forward to my [G]visit when it's [Em]206[D]1
I [C]wonder what has [D]happened, what [G]humankind has [Em]done
While I'm [C]half way a[Cm]round the [G]Sun

[C][G][C][G]
[C][G][Em][D]
[C][D][G][Em]
[C][Cm][G]

It's [F]time to turn a[C]round
You're [F]not going to let me [D]down

I [C]hope it's going [G]well, and I [C]hope you're having [G]fun
I look [C]forward to my [G]visit when it's [Em]206[D]1
I [C]wonder what has [D]happened, what [G]humankind has [Em]done
While I'm [C]half way a[Cm]round the [G]Sun

I [C]hope that you are [G]happy and I [C]hope you live in [G]peace
I look [C]forward to the [G]progress that I'm [Em]surely going to [D]see
I [C]wonder if I'll [D]celebrate what [G]humankind ac[Em]hieved
When I was [C]half way a[Cm]round the [Em]Sun

[C]Half way a[Cm]round the [G]Sun

I like your lyrics and the backing track. I feel like this should be in a movie or tv show. Cheery and nice harmonica too.

Good song idea and well written. I like the production too. The instruments sound full without fighting the vocal.

I love how the instrumentation builds and builds. So optimistic!

Halley's is my favorite comet. It came around when I was a kid and it would give me great pleasure to see it again in future. I hope it's as happy to see us as you've imagined here!

Love the POV and the song but if we don’t act on the climate crisis NOW the comet is going to be very disappointed with us. So much potential to be better, currently being ruined by greed and Big Oil.

Clever idea, I have a feel it might shake its head with a lot of missed opportunities! Very nice song always a plus with a bit of harmonica.

what a wonderful and creative idea, made real by this very interesting and entertaining song! great thought to write in the voice of the comet! but of course its about us here on this planet, and very well done indeed!

Halley's had its aphelion on December 9, 2023, so you aren't far off. It's nice to remember that if we take the long view of history, things have gotten better and hopefully will keep doing so.

very clever concept of using the comet as a big eye that comes around to check in on us every 90 years. and you did a splendid job of filling out the sound with additional instruments. of all the comets that have been promised to our naked eyes, this is the only one i was able to see, and i was out in the yard every night watching it. too bad about those idiots who thought it was a spceship to paradise.

A delightful take on the perspective of a traveler returning home. I was kind of expecting it to be a song from our perspective, wandering about the comet, but you chose the other way around and I think it’s delightful. There’s a fair amount of hope in your lyrics, with a lot of tragedy sprinkled in.
