“Tomorrow’s Not Too Soon” - #fawm 50/90 2024 song 42

Here’s another lyrics-only draft from last summer’s skirmishes. Like with yesterday’s song, I don’t really recall what the prompt was. Rediscovering these songs to finish them has been so interesting. I like how I varied the chorus lyrics in this one.

10 lyric drafts left to finish from 2023…

Lyrics

The lightning flashed like strobes last night
The thunder slow to roll behind
The toll keeps getting paid
But still the crossbar doesn’t rise

A less-laid plan is scribbled on
The door to Someday’s tomb
Today’s already over and
Tomorrow’s not too soon

You’re kept awake by memory
The kind that looks ahead
You’re silos full of words like
Grain that rots before it's bread

Busy, busy in the way
The pitcher spilling on the tray
Today’s already over and
Tomorrow’s not too soon

It’s more than gruel you’re asking for
Pick up the stitch and bring it toward
Desire unlocks the door

The ego fades, the soul folds
With time comes age’s bloom
Your ticket out is ever in
Tomorrow’s not too soon

That desire for love is elemental
Don’t get stuck unwound
So many voices in the static
Which one surfaces as sound?

Wanting is so crucial
Wanting is so cruel
Your ticket out is ever in
Tomorrow’s not, tomorrow’s not, tomorrow’s not too soon

I really like the lovely tune you set these words to.

I might be really off the mark here but I guess before e-z pass I used to worry that the toll ticket would somehow fly out of the car while I was driving and I'd then be, I dunno, forbidden to leave the turnpike, forever

This is pleasantly thoughtful, and I like all the imagery you used. So much of it is machinery-based, I find that really interesting. It kind of invokes the "cog in the machine" sort of reflection on our place in life. Really pretty singing, too, and I like the variations in the melody's rhythm.

i love it whe a grotesque line such as "You’re silos full of words like
Grain that rots before it's bread" is sung so prettily. I also like the reversal of the cliche "Tomorrow Comes Too Soon" because it stimulates the mind to meditate on the implications of the opposite meaning.

Nice lyrics and a very lovely vocal melody, especially like the verses

This is such a pretty song you know with some undertones of longing and hardship. Got a great voice that ukulele playing is masterful.

Good for you going back to revisit past lyrics. I like the music for this one. Great title and love the way you deliver that line.
