Where I Don't Belong

I wrote this in the hour or so I had before we left for St. Louis this past Saturday (to see some friends and the band Diesel Island with John Horton guesting on guitar which means 3/4 of the Bottle Rockets were playing classic country cover songs and I enjoyed it immensely) and then promptly forgot all about it until I was chatting in the slack about being uninspired and thinking I should check one of the, at least, half dozen things I've started and not finished this 50/90. Turns out at least one of them was more or less finished after all.

Lyrics

I keep my eyes shut tight
So I won't fall in love
I try to hide in the night
'Cause I'm not strong enough

Don't give me a reason to love you
Don't lead me on
My heart can't take another break
Please don't string me along
Where I don't belong

The walls that I've built around me
Can't keep me safe
Now that you've managed to find me
They go up in a blaze

Don't give me a reason to love you
Don't lead me on
My heart can't take another break
Please don't string me along
Where I don't belong

I've spent half my life
Running from pain
Never stopping to notice
What I could gain
But in the end
I'm still afraid
Afraid of the choices that I've made

Don't give me a reason to love you
Don't lead me on
My heart can't take another break
Please don't string me along
Where I don't belong

i particularly like the guitar part, which puts dramatic twists in all the right places. the minor chord on "don't lead me on" is like the drop on a roller coaster; i feel it right in my gut.

The strums in the opening and also coming out of "where I don't belong" and the bridge are great. The walkdown leading into them is tasty as well. As far as the song itself, I'm not sold on the character actually wanting to keep his eyes shut to love, which I believe is intended, and the hurt comes through lyrically, and a theme easy to connect with.

I like the percussive playing in the verses. Has a nice push to propel it into the chorus. The 3/4 is a nice change for the ears. Also, I love that line, "Don't give me a reason to love you." It really encompasses and summarizes the whole song. And if anyone has been in that situation, and most have, then they automatically identify with and understand where the writer is taking them. It's a good, solid tune. I like it.

Crazy that you did this one hour before leaving for a trip. It sounds great. The guitar playing is just aggressive enough that it feels determined to move on but not all the way.
