“To Get Past You” - #fawm 50/90 2024 song 38

Here’s another lyrics-only draft from last summer, finally completed with demo. I wrote the music on another uke but then thought I might like to perform it on the baritone uke, so I transposed it and I do like it better with this instrument. Might still tweak the lyrics a little.

I always get a little spooked going around the roundabout. What if I can’t get out? What if that were an analogy?

Lyrics

You're the one wouldn’t stop when we got lost
I’m the one paying the cost
It don't matter who left the map in a mess
If I flunked the quiz, I can still pass the test

Feels like I misjudged a roundabout
I keep on circling, circling, circling you
And I can’t get off, I cannot drive out
It just keeps repeating the same old view
I’ve got to get past you

You’re the one made our ride a situation
With all your stipulations
Don’t give me an inch when I need my own mile
* (alt. line: … when I ask for a mile) ??
Don’t tell me to smile, don’t you tell me to smile

CHORUS

I’ve got to get myself blown off course
I’ve got to get to my alone
I’ve got to reclaim my time and my power
You are no longer my home but I know
I’ll get past you and it's been time to go...

CHORUS

The central lyrical concept of this song is really excellent. The idea of a relationship as being analogous to being stuck in a roundabout that you can't get out of is really great. Nice work!

this just flows so effortlessly and not just tonally but with dynamics and the whole song. It's great! I gotta get caught up on your 5090 cause wow you've been busy!

Your voice is such that anything you sing ends up sounding good! This is wonderful. Here's my roundabout story: after Glens Falls opened their first roundabout years ago, some of the locals brought their lawn chairs down to watch peaple drive through it. LOL

"Don’t give me an inch when I need my own mile" I like this much more than the alternate. The roundabout is such a good metaphor for the dull repititions of a love affair that you are having a hard time exiting.
