Hikikomori

Liner Notes

Hikikomori (literally translated as pulling inward, being confined) is a relatively recently noticed form of extreme social isolation.

First recognised in Japan and initially believed to be due to the cultural social pressures put on young Japanese to succeed, fit in and conform and sometimes linked to a specific social or academic failure, it is now being noticed world wide among teens and young adults.

Hikikomori drift into isolation, often confining themselves solely to their bedroom for months and sometimes years. They avoid all forms of social interaction, preferring the sterile controlled safety of virtual reality.

They have no desire for any kind of social interaction actively avoiding it and consequently do not work. In Japan, they are often supported by their parents who are too ashamed to discuss their family issues with anyone.

According to Japanese government figures released in 2010, there were at that time 700,000 individuals living as Hikikomori within Japan, with an average age of 31 leading to the phrase 'The 2030s problem' when the parents of the Hikikomori will be nearing the end of their life and the Hikikomori will be left without support.

Lyrics

Drifting into isolation
Hikikomori
It's the 2030's problem
Hikikomori
Post modern hermits all those
Hikikomori
Persistent in avoidance
Hikikomori
Social, academic failure?
Hikikomori
Self imposed bedroom gaoler
Hikikomori.

I'm trapped inside myself,
It's like I'm in a trance.
Happy safe my virtual life,
I don't go out or dance.
I'm trapped inside myself.

Drifting into isolation
Hikikomori
It's the 2030's problem
Hikikomori
Post modern hermits all those
Hikikomori
Persistent in avoidance
Hikikomori
Social, academic failure?
Hikikomori
Self imposed bedroom gaoler
Hikikomori.

I'm trapped inside myself,
It's like I'm in a trance.
Happy safe my virtual life,
Don't need to sing or dance.
I'm trapped inside myself.
A transcendental trance.

Drifting into isolation
Hikikomori
It's the 2030's problem
Hikikomori
Post modern hermits all those
Hikikomori
Persistent in avoidance
Hikikomori
Social, academic failure?
Hikikomori
Self imposed bedroom gaoler
Hikikomori.

Drifting into isolation
Hikikomori
It's the 2030's problem
Hikikomori
Post modern hermits all those
Hikikomori
Persistent in avoidance
Hikikomori
Social, academic failure?
Hikikomori
Self imposed bedroom gaoler
Hikikomori.

Hikikomori,
Hikikomori,
Hikikomori,
Hikikomori.

Neat gear shifts; there's an energy and rawness that comes across really well.

The topic is left-field, do you need to get out more!? 😶

Even Japan's psychosocial ailments seem strange to Western sensibilities, although I suspect this particular one will become increasingly familiar. I can see the appeal of being a post-modern hermit, though.

The vibe of this takes me back to all the early new wave releases on Stiff Records. For about ten years around the turn of the eighties, all the interesting and cool stuff seemed to be on that label. Which is a roundabout way of saying that this has a very cool and interesting sound. I love it.

How the bleak idea of this situation comes alive in your written lyric and further bursts onto the scene hooking ears in fab song!

Cool write and ultra fun tune revealing something serious in a most solid, helpful, entertaining way by exposing it with truthfulness and appeal. Well done!
