The Anti-War War Song

by @lbrewington

Challenge: Refrain (No Chorus)

Liner Notes

Approaching the week's refrain challenge and I guess it was time to do an anti-capitalism song. Also felt like this would be a good one to throw a spoken word piece into the middle because what is better than being preachy. Hopefully the snark comes across, if not it's also in the title, but at the same time the hope is the choir is not the one listening and the people who need to hear it are saying hell yeah.

I also like writing anti-capital songs because it allows me to pull out the conspiracy theory "they" character, which allows me to cast vague stones without hitting anyone. That sort of wimpy approach is easily hidden through a murky shroud of secrecy.

Took about three or four hours, wrote most of it while watching tv so not only is that ironic but something I'm usually not capable of. I figure it's either getting easier, this fluffy money is bad stuff writes itself, or being distracted just makes for a worse song. Getting close to the halfway point of fifty songs and it's an interesting spot to have to think about writing songs all the time and hitting a wall, but in a brand appropriate callout, I'm trying to be like the Kool-Aid man, "Oh yeah!".

(Running out air while doing the spoken piece was interesting. Far from a perfect take but that one got a chuckle of me).

Lyrics

c -g am f
lust for money is a virtue in the halls of this home
and greed is only a vice if you sitting broken alone
dinner's served prompt at six so pack the courts fill the bench
uber me a p - a c , pass a law to make em free

[refrain]

all is fair in love and war and honey this is war

you can dig a trench and build sandbag with the meager saving you have
but they got a bomb with stock and bombs that'll blow it straight to hell
they sell your mortgage to the highest builder like a fighter jet it'll crash and burn

[refrain]

c g am f

the capital in capitalism is looking lean in love
free market is just another word for legal to break the law
when the only metric for success begins with a dollar sign

[refrain]

be skeptical in life
the more money has person has the more lives they have stepped upon
there is a reason net worth isn't public and in capitalism the scoreboard is hidden
war & peace is a book of fiction because peace is an illusion
because it's hard to be a millionaire while retaining all your morals
and if your living in a broken system and given the choice of life or death
then that's a decision worth making

[refrain]

so load the car with the kickback money and steal from all your friends
cause when your heart is full and and your pockets slim,
they'll be saying you been doing it wrong
so it's do or die and there are no rules it's best to get ahead

That's a cool challenge to not do a refrain. I felt that given the constraints of this task, you nailed it. Keep on keeping on!

I think you did a fine job of not being preachy (for the most part) and just describing what the narrator sees. I'm not your target audience but thought you approached the subject reasonably well.

i like the refrain and the way it is used in the song. you hit a lot of marks throughout the verses and then spell it out inthe spoken word section. i liked that to.
