“Ready Steady” - #fawm 50/90 2024 song 33

I probably would’ve recorded another take or two, but the lightning and thunder that hit in this take seemed too good to waste. I started working on this song only because I just discovered this draft in my “done” pile — but it wasn’t done at all. Coincidentally, a storm’s coming!

These lyrics aren’t my usual style, but it was fun to deviate.

Lyrics

V1
Weather warning
Winds are swarming
Earthquake’s bound to shake

Wave unwinding
Fire and lightning
Takes what it can take

PC
There’s gonna be a thunderstorm
I’m gonna be your cornerstone
We’re gonna be our home (hold fast)
When the sky breaks free

C
Ready steady
Ready steady, steady
Ready steady, ready steady
Ready steady, steady

V2
Stepper, prepper
World can get you
Hailfall overhead

Mud is sliding
No use hiding
Blood you saved to shed

PC
C

B
All I’ve got -- that ties me to this rock
Is gravity, It feels like you,
Like anything they wanna throw at us
We’re gonna get through

Totally relate to this one - it's the height of Florida summer here! Delightful wordplay and tune to match.

So good the thunder and lightning joined in on cue! The vocal melody and chorus rise sound great, skillfully sung. You really make the uke sound good too.

I love how you know exactly how to construct a great vocal melody. You use vocal leaps so well. Very cool. Love that bridge.

the gods must have heard you recording this and had to get in on the act with a display of their thunder. What an unusual song. It seems an unlikely one to be sung by a person fearing such a life threatening act of god. I can imagin it, though, being sung by mary Poppins to calm the terrified children as the storm approachs, and then all of them laughing, no long afraid, through the ready steady choruses.
