The story is in the book "Deryni Checkmate" by Katherine Kurtz. When I played the chord progression and hummed the melody to my husband @joe_addams, he said it sounded like that story to him, and now, here it is.

Lyrics

(Capo 4)

V1
C
Lady Bronwyn of the golden hair
Em
Lord Kevin, strong and fine
F Am
A mated pair, a fated pair
G
Whose love outlasts all time

C
Betrothed they were, their marriage
Em
Only three days hence
F Am
But jealousy and envy
G Am
Would put an end to sense

Chorus
F Am
For Rimmell was a madman
Em
Mad in love, was he
F C
All for the love of Bronwyn
G Am
A love that could not be

V2
The two of them, unknowing
Of what fate had in store
Went about their merry way
And loved each other more

While Rimmell sat in jealousy
And then set on his aim
To separate them evermore
And take her as his claim

Chorus

V3
He set a crystal in her rooms
To turn her love his way
But badly-set, it backfired
And caused her life to fray

She cried out in her terror
And Kevin ran to aid
But caught within the crystal
In death they both were laid

Chorus

V4
And now they lie together
In crypts of marbled stone
They will be there forever
They will never be alone

And Rimmell has been dispatched
Whose spell did them destroy
Good riddance to that traitor
Who stole from us their joy

Chorus

I agree that the song does have an epic feel. The soft attack on the guitar suggests an older instrument, which matches nicely.

I was a real fan of that series when the books came out. I haven't thought about them in a few decades. Thanks for the reminder. 😀

I love this song so much. I can see a bard sitting beside the fireplace, reminding the folk of the couple’s sad tale.

Wonderful storytelling of a tragic take with a beautiful melody and gorgeous clear vocals and great fingerpicking. Really well done!
