Howdy, 50/90ers! I wanted to write a song about the fear of burnout and its certain inevitability in a capitalist culture.
On a personal note, I get genuinely afraid of nearing breakdown whenever things are going well. There's a part of me that feels there must be a time limit for how long I'm allowed to be happy and in the zone, which is a mentality I need to figure out how to kick. It's a puzzle I will put on the shelf until I get a new therapist, ha!
Lyrics
Limoncello soda water
Air conditioning, I got it made
Grass is yellow, dead of summer
Hundred-ten degrees in the shade
Keep your head down and get to work
The only way they’ll know what you’re worth
Climb aboard the altar and they’ll bleed you dry in worship
But I am headed for a breakdown
I don’t want to burn out
But I don’t want to slow down
(I’m not in control)
It took too much to get here
I don’t want to stop now
(It’s taking its toll)
I don’t know when my time is up
But I’m not leaving with an empty cup
I don’t want to burn out
But I’m not going without something to show for it
Rice and chicken, clearance shopping
Get the cheapest option they can make
Live Tweeting your shoplifting
It isn’t really stealing when you’re taking from the snakes
The system cheats you, so cheat it back
Karl Marx has got your back
You know it’s not your fault you’re on the attack
We’re all headed for a breakdown
I don’t want to burn out
But I don’t want to slow down
(I’m not in control)
It took too much to get here
I don’t want to stop now
(It’s taking its toll)
I don’t know when my time is up
But I’m not leaving with an empty cup
I don’t want to burn out
But I’m not going without something to show for it
Something to show for it
Limoncello soda water, should be cool
But something is wrong
I don’t want to burn out
But I don’t want to slow down
(I’m not in control)
It took too much to get here
I don’t want to stop now
(It’s taking its toll)
I don’t know when my time is up
But I’m not leaving with an empty cup
I don’t want to burn out
But I’m not going without something to show for it
I don’t want to burn out
But I’m not going without something to show for it
