Lyrics

Sarah was strong. She worked hard all day long
And her kind heart lifted him so
But the cancer that came was stronger still
And by August he watched Sarah go

He laid her out in the front parlor there
With candles all round about
Town folk were kind and they paid their respects
By nightfall he blew the candles out

Refrain
But a farm is no good without proper attention
It withers and dies and leaves no remains
He knew she'd know that things couldn't wait
On a farm on the Oklahoma Plains

Winters were rough, spring would come soon enough
And alone was no way to be
So he let it out he was seeking a wife
And prayed that Sarah would agree

He set out some tea on a Sunday afternoon
And tried to shake all his doubts
But the hours dragged on and not a soul made a stop
By nightfall he blew the candles out

Refrain

Winter it came and winter it went
Then it was time to plant corn
He so wanted Sarah there by his side
His heart was lost and forlorn

He was strong and worked hard all day long
But the farm, it held no more clout
He knew his love was waiting above
By nightfall he blew the candles out

Refrain

What a great topic and you really deliver. Great work.

Great country folk ballad feel and fabulous story telling of a very sad song that is likely relatable to so many of us who has lost so much to cancer. Beautifully developed and delivered with such wonderfully nuanced emotion.

This story breaks my heart--in a good way. I immediately relate to this man and I feel his heartbreak and loneliness. Wonderful song.

What an emotional wallop of a song! Excellent storytelling lyric, and the vocal suits the words just right. I love traditional country like this. So good!

Tender and meaningful this lyric brings tears as well as it prods the listener to remember to instill confidence in others, should they themselves ever have to be looked after in time of need.

Dug how you worked in "town folk"--created even more truer mood/time piece and exposition for the life of the storyteller here. Fab how you managed in "farm" as being a metaphor for life and its troubles, too. Cool connection explored.

Loved the song. Solid cadence. Believable delivery and performance. A tune that you didn't want to end because of how genuine it felt at telling a story+-like Don McLean's "American Pie."
