"Independence (Take 1)" was originally done in a July 4 skirmish. Several commenters felt that my minor chord progression didn't work with my celebratory lyric. I wouldn't have thought of that myself since Harmonic minor IS my happy place. But I took it as a songwriting challenge and set the lyric here in a different musical space using all major chords. Turns out I like it better. It also fits the One chord progression challenge. I'll leave the original up for now but probably use that progression for something more appropriate.

Listened to this first, then went back to Take 1 and back here again. While my personal preference is for this version, the other one is also great. I know with skirmishes you may not have spent enough time with the song to get completely attached to one particular element but I have a huge admiration for the skill of rewriting and this is an excellent example.

I love the layered metallic tones. The vibe is part festival, part standing strong — perfect, of course, for a holiday that has Independence in its name. It could be a big crowd singing this song (assuming you could project the lyrics on the big screens) and it wouldn’t change the feeling much.
