Hi, friends! Happy Monday! I'm uploading a couple songs I didn't get to post while on my Utah trip last week.
This is "Five o' Clock Shadow," which started out as the first line as an earworm circling my head. I had no idea where the song was going for most of the time writing it--which is pretty neat that songwriting can still be mysterious and a little scary at times! Looking at it as the sum of its parts, I think it's about a snarky guardian angel trying to help someone get over an existential crisis, who is starting to take on more physical attributes the longer they're on this plane (having a shadow but no body yet, etc).
Lyrics
Ooh, 5 o’ clock shadow is giving away my position
Ooh, sing a soprano, whatever it takes to get you to listen
Do I have your attention? ‘Cause I
Watched you walk the garden, waiting on a sign
Winter thaws and hardens, never a straight line
Find a place to make your stand
I will try to help you understand
Why it never goes the way you planned
The tide washes away your castle in the sand
Ooh, giving and taking, keeping nothing for yourself
Ooh, rattled and shaken, flaking away, faking the tells
Do I have to break apart? ‘Cause I
Watched you walk the shoreline, pain in every breath
Summer melts and hardens, go make your amends
Find a place to make your stand
I will try to help you understand
Why it never goes the way you planned
The tide washes away your castle in the sand
Ooh, 5 o’ clock shadow is giving away my position
