Liner Notes

10th track from my (hopefully first?) 50/90 project called Stepping Stones. Not too much to note lyrically; it's a darker love song than Pisces Sun, that's for sure.

What is special to note, however, is the fact that THIS SONG HAS A GODDAMN STRINGED INSTRUMENT IN IT. Wow! Rejoice, you can stop hearing piano/MIDI stuff for a single moment. Last year when I was writing this song, I decided to do my Annual Attempt At Learning Guitar, which usually lasts like a week and then I move on because I'm too over the hill for those muscles to become memory.

But hey, here I learned how to play the ukulele for this track and I think it adds a nice layer of rhythm. The funny part is, having just recorded the vocals a week or two ago, the instrumental is so old at this point that I have no idea how to play it again. That's just lost. Gone. Ashes. Kind of poignant and appropriate though.

Anyways, this is a dark, moody track with some actual string-based rhythm in it and it'll take me another year to do another! Hope it's not too grating for actual guitarists, but I shouldn't even have to say that because I bet my piano playing is grating to pianists. Ah well!

This will be the last track in the batch of songs I finished today, next time I'm back I'll be polishing off this Old @ss album and hopefully moving onto new things! Thanks for listening.

Lyrics

Verse 1:
Lay your thoughts
In the hole in the wall,
One by one,
We can brick 'em all up,

So the pretty little lights won't know,
That over and over again
All they said
Was to let it go.

The final breath
Of the fury and the sound,
It follows the curve of a
Well-worn crown.

It's so beautiful now,
In the way that the shadows
Flow like a dress,
At the edge of town.

Chorus 1:
Feed another fuck-up
To the flickering flames,
Burn it all up,
And when enough is enough,

You'll be left with all the daydreams
That got you intoxicated,
And the thoughts that
Kept you down and sedated.

Bend until you're broken
In a beautiful home.
Back to the wall,
Do you know where to go

When all the Stepping Stones,
That lead you across the river,
Will take you from
"The Better" to bitter?

Verse 2:
My cup runneth over
With the choices that I've made,
The Bad that I give,
And the Good that I take,

So why can't I ever heal?
I've dreamed of the mountains,
Putting pennies into fountains,
And I still can't feel.

The part of the whole
Is no greater than the sum,
The hole in my chest makes me feel so
Goddamn numb and empty.

In a coffin-shaped room
And all I want is to be human,
And to feel your love.

Bridge:
When you hear the siren sound,
I'll meet you at the Edge of Town.
When you're ready to burn it all down,
I'll meet you at the Edge of Town.

Chorus:
Slip into the chorus
For a final reprieve,
Waiting on forever, together,
When it's over I can bid adieu to misery,

And dream of another life.
A better chance to love,
In a different time.

Maybe, in the morning,
I can tell you the truth;
That I don't know how to be,
How to speak,
How to breathe,
How to see or
How to choose.

But I'm trying just to
Feel like I matter.
I'm trying every day
To get better.

Ukulele!! Yippee!! It's so good! "The final breath / Of the fury and the sound /It follows the curve of a / Well-worn crown" is such a good verse, and then later the sound of the siren, all making this darkly appealing obliteration. It's moody, I love it!

Oh WOW, the atmosphere you've created right off the bat is incredible. I love me a long intro and I appreciate that you give us time to steep in the ambience before the lyrics come in. Your lyrics are stunning, and the vocal delivery is phenomenal. Vocal doubling was a great choice for this. I love the sparse octave peppered throughout.
