How I Wish

Doug (@crisp1) can write stuff that'll make your heart soar, melt or nearly crack down the middle. I'm getting on up there in human years and finding myself encountering this kind of emotion more and more, so this one definitely called out to me. My treatment on the music is pretty weepy I suppose, so be forewarned.

Doug: @jeff9 I think you actually produced this in an understated manner that lets the story tell itself. Your vocals are very gentle, and I love the strum pattern of the guitar. Is that an accordion I'm hearing? This came out really nice. Thanks for another great collab!

Lyrics

How I Wish
Lyrics - Doug Haberman
Music - Jeff Walker

We once looked at the star-filled sky and you pointed out Orion

You told me of the distances and then I started crying

You held me in your strong arms to calm me down

How I wish that you were still around

You taught me the big difference between a fib and lying

That forgiving those who’ve wronged you can be so purifying

That you can hurt someone’s feelings without making a sound

How I wish that you were still around

You showed me more than words could say

’Cos I learned from watching every day

You set an example I try to emulate:
Integrity, hard work, and love over hate

The homeless man you’d bring lunch to – his eyes would always widen

The gentle care you gave to Gramps the week that he lay dying

Your loss is still too painful, it’s hard to rebound

’Cos I wish that you were still around

How I wish that you were still around

You guys are a dangerous combination. What with the poignant lyrics and the heartfelt performance, you can break a heart.

Lovely lyric, Doug. Ultra relatable, rich in detail, and down-to-earth.
And Jeff, your tender vocals and musical accompaniment are the perfect vehicle for the lyrical sentiment.

A really fine collaboration. (-:

Yes the lyrics are nice. I like the rich tone of your voice as well. It suits this sort of story song well. Beautifully produced.

I am a big fan of Doug's lyrics, and this one is especially beautiful. Oh my goodness I am really enjoying your gorgeous bed of acoustic guitars and your rich and tender vocals singing such a lovely melody. All of your melodic choices are making my ears very happy! I am getting Iron and Mountain vibes also. I can hear a sing like this as a track in a TV show or movie. It has such a sense of yearning and loss and is so well done. What a collab! Seriously WOW!

Simply beautiful. Rock solid connection between lyric and music, which can be elusive to find, and when it's right, has a powerful impact. Excellent job to the both of you!

Wow, this was moving some emotions around for me. The calm delivery of the vocals with the sentimental lyrics is so very good. The second verse starts with “you taught ..” was my favorite but the Gramps line almost got a tear out of this old stone. Great job on this one. Very smooth.

A heartbreaker of a collab! The combination of Jeff's baritone voice and Doug's lyric, I knew would be a goody before I started listening!

Jeez, guys--this is almost TOO good!

Definitely a new favorite for 50/90 so far for me. ❤️

Wonderful collab, Jeff and Doug. A perfect match. I can sure relate to this story, and I know the pain of losing a parent, or should I say, both of them. Funny how they’re still around, though, whispering in my ear.

This is very moving. I like the gentle music and tempo. The vocal is filled with emotion that can't help draw you in. And the details in the lyric are specific to the story and make it stand out giving us a lovely, heart filled song.

Strong emotion of longing here but with a gentle hint of optimism that prevents it from getting too heavy. Great musical treatment and wonderful vocal delivery. A very touching piece.

Jeff has those gentle heart-stirring vocals. They really tell the story here. And take me back to a gentler time. Brings tears to my eyes.

Sad and somehow uplifting lyric.

This song comes together so nicely. The guitar work and vocals are gentle, yet strong and help to tell the story as well as the lyrics do. This is a great collab.

Doug has given you a terrific lyric to work with and you have brought something special to it with your smoothly emotive voice and carefully phrased melodic lines. your singng here remnds me of the lesson tim hardin taught me...that strong emotions are more effectively conveyed through subtlety than by screaming.
