Misread My Hole Cards

Liner Notes

Man, I played a lot of poker in my youth--starting in 8th grade and then kind of rediscovering it when it became a tv hit...then again when all those casinos started cropping up down the street. Play with a group of fellow oldsters once a month now. So here's a little homage to the game, spiced up with a little "Heartbreak Is My Brand ™".

MISREAD MY HOLE CARDS

It was a dimly lit Friday,
the stakes felt so right
Across the table, your eyes,
gleamed in the neon light
I played my heart,
laid out every part.
You held your cards close,
like a fortress for your heart.

CHORUS:
I MISREAD MY HOLE CARDS,
thought we were a pair.
I gambled on a heart
that was never really there.
You were bluffing your way
through what I believed.
I folded my dreams,
while you watched me grieve.

The dealer’s hands were yours,
they were shuffling deceit.
I bet on the truth,
with every heartbeat.
Your poker face
hid your traces of doubt.
I went all in,
but you were all out.

I missed the signs,
the little tells in your touch.
I believed in us,
but you not so much.
My trust was the queen,
yours the joker at play.
In this silent game,
only I was set to pay.

CHORUS:
I MISREAD MY HOLE CARDS,
thought we were a pair.
I gambled on a heart
that was never really there.
You were bluffing your way
through what I believed.
I folded my dreams,
while you watched me grieve.

Now the table is clear,
the chips are all down.
The echo of my losing
is the only sound.
Next time I will know,
when to hold and when to part.
Next time I’ll read the cards
before I bet my heart.

I’ll shuffle my dreams,
and deal them anew
Next time I will see
when the hand is not true.
I'll have clearer eyes,
and a much wiser heart.
Bet my bottom dollar
won't MISREAD MY HOLE CARDS .

CHORUS:
I MISREAD MY HOLE CARDS,
thought we were a pair.
I gambled on a heart
that was never really there.
You were bluffing your way
through what I believed.
I folded my dreams,
while you watched me grieve.

This is so good! I love that lap steel, cuts right to the heart. "I folded my dreams / while you watched me grieve" is such a heartbreaking lyric. Really great work!

Ha, nice metaphor here! I quite like the sly country feel, the winking attitude, full of character and FUN (yeah, the lyrics are "sad," but you sound like you're smiling through your tears)!

Love the words play and the imagery with Jerry's flavour. Very beautiful song, another winner.

Playing a strong hand again, Jerry...keeping those ace metaphors coming for the win where others might have folded...

Interesting tidbit! (yours). My ex-husband was a poker player - used to go to Vegas from San Francisco a lot! He wanted to go pro. I spent a lot of time by myself out by the pool or in the room. He'd play all night. One night I dropped in and found him sitting there with his eyes closed, which he denied - lol!

Smooth melody, production, vocals. Clever lyrics! Nice one!
