Liner Notes

Around half a century ago, I played the Lyke Wake Dirge atop the Cerne Abbas Giant, just as the Sun was setting. I played it on a Moeck Tuju maple soprano recorder that, to a fourteen year-old me, was an amazing birthday gift from a couple of very dear friends. I played the last note... and it hung in the air, almost taking on a life of its own. Words can't really describe it, but there was definitely old magic at work. That note continued long after I took the recorder from my lips.

I've improvised this piece with that memory (and I still get the goosebumps) in mind.

And I still have the recorder, but this was played on an alto flute.

The story from the liner notes is amazing! I have a few Native American Wood Flutes but I've only ever been able to coax a couple of short songs from them, but your story and this song is an inspiration to pick them up more. Beautiful piece.

Wonderful memory.. and a great conmemmative song. Great haunting melody but in a pleasant way..like only you can do.

You've described it well enough but the music does it better - the kind of drums and the tootlestick takes me back to a meeting of tribes long ago, you are looking down on them as they assemble to feast and party. The different type of 'shortened' notes at the end stand out too. Evocative.

Wow! LOVE this arrangement. That is some lovely recorder and the PERFECT amount of reverb on it. Love the choir background. Really a terrific song! ❤️
