Liner Notes

This song evolved from my efforts to learn how to program Logic Pro 11's new virtual session players - drums, keyboard, and bass. Once I had a complete song structure in place, I decided to turn the practice exercise into a song about a memorable picnic I once had in France.

Lyrics

Picture-Perfect
©️2024 - words and music by Sharon Stepler

We’ve wandered the Musee d’Orsay
And the L’Orangerie
Pretending our jet lag is all gone

It’s time to see Monsieur Monet’s
Home in Giverny
Let’s catch the train from Paris to Vernon

Weather’s gorgeous - let’s rent bikes
And picnic on the way
The village shops have everything we need

That Camembert that we both like
Some bread fresh-baked today
And a bottle of good red Burgundy

A day as picture-perfect as a painting by Monet
Baguettes and cheese beside the Seine
This wine is divine
Paper cups of sunshine
I may never feel so fine again

Leafy oaks of emerald green
Sky of cloudless blue
Reflected in the river’s silver flow

A ruined bridge completes the scene
Claude Monet once knew
He captured it on canvas long ago

Monet’s house and gardens wait
Still we linger on -
Sipping wine and taking it all in

Our picnic transubstantiates
To a feast fit for the gods -
There must be some magic on the wind

A day as picture-perfect as a painting by Monet
Baguettes and cheese beside the Seine
This wine is divine
Paper cups of sunshine
I may never feel so fine again

It's many years and many miles
Long ago and far away
We’ve traveled countless roads since then

But a fresh baguette still makes me smile
With the memory of that day
And good Burgundy transports me there again

A day as picture-perfect as a painting by Monet
Baguettes and cheese beside the Seine
This wine is divine
Paper cups of sunshine
I may never feel so fine again

Lovely vocal in a blissfully simple production. You've captured the perfect afternoon. I've never heard "transubstantiates" used in a lyric before! 😀

This is cheerful and gave me some happy feels. I love the descriptions of the food and the scenery, you added enough specifics to make it feel real. The tinkly keyboard in the background made me smile, and your vocal sounds great. Some neat little ups and downs in the melody to keep our attention, too - very nice.

Some wonderful details in this story. It's a feel-good song and makes me want to travel! I especially enjoyed "Paper cups of sunshine, I may never feel so fine again". Pretty vocal and music.

Threw me back to the movie Paris Can Wait, a romantic comedy that I found quite charming. The same sense of enjoying the French countryside and its culinary delicatesses in all its splendour.

I really like the overall feel of this. It's a nice positive uplifting quality to it and love the reference to Monet. Great song!
