Liner Notes

A song about the night Officer Jason Ellis was shot and killed near Bardstown while the band vehicle was broken down coming back from a gig and had to be towed a few miles from home by a locally famous wrecker driver named Happy Mackin. 100% non-fiction.

Lyrics

We drank Evan Williams from a bottle under the seat
And heard the latest album by an old band called The Sweet
Said Pretty good night, man, we held the room
Even though the Stratocaster barely stayed in tune
The night Happy Mackin dragged us home
The night Happy Mackin dragged us home

We were dodgin’ deer and possum down the 523
When the fuel pump went out on Bryan’s Audi
He called his wife, told her we’d be coming home soon
We smoked Marlboro Lights under a waxing crescent moon
The night Happy Mackin dragged us home
The night Happy Mackin dragged us home

We woke up Happy Mackin just around two
He said I’ll be be right there, let me put on my shoes
He chained the Audi to the wrecker truck and we climbed into the cab
Smelling like reefer and a maxed out bar tab
The night Happy Mackin dragged us home
The night Happy Mackin dragged us home

Several shots rang out about ten miles away
An officer down, dead on Bluegrass Parkway
The never found the man who fired the shots
Underneath that crescent moon
The night Happy Mackin dragged us home
The night Happy Mackin dragged us home

That is a heck of a story. The way the shooting comes in at the end is a great, surprise twist.
