One of Roland's ka-tet, reflecting on the town of River Crossing's generosity and hospitality to them.

Lyrics

V1
C Em F C
I want to tell a quiet little story
F C G
Of a place few travelers ever even saw
C Em F Am
A place you would not see if you were looking
F G C
A place where every curtain was a-draw
C Em F C
The people of this place called River Crossing
F C G
Were hidden there in plain and open sight
C Em F Am
They greeted us with caution, but they knew us
F G C
As those who walked the pathway of the White

V2
In the silence of the town called River Crossing
In the garden that is hidden from the scene
We were feasted and we held with them palaver
And they heard what little news we had to bring
They gave to us what they had there to offer
They gave us food and drink, and safe abode
Though we knew we could not stay there in their shelter
We did what we could to give them what was owed

CHORUS
F Am
The town of River Crossing was a wonder
F E
As the world has moved along, and they were old
F Am
But they gave to us what they had there to offer
F G C
I hope we gave them something new to hold

V3
The eldest of them all was Aunt Talitha
Their leader, she, and knowing all she knew
She gave her cross to Roland for the Tower
And asked that he would place it there, and true
To say we left reluctantly is faulty
We all felt the pull to stay right where we were
But we realized we could not help them further
And the Tower called us onward as a spur.

CHORUS

V4
So we bade farewell to quiet River Crossing
That hidden town of elders and of lore
And we set our sights again upon the Tower
Bidding them farewell, who we would see no more
The trek that night was harder than our usual
Even Oy was somber, knowing as we knew
That the quiet little town of River Crossing
Would disappear as small towns often do

CHORUS

CHORUS 2
F Am
Because the town of River Crossing was a wonder
F E
As the world has moved along, and they were few
F Am
May their days be long – may they have twice the number
F G Am
May they be remembered long, remembered true
F G C
May they be remembered long, remembered true

You've evoked this world of honor and kindness, surrounded by sadness, with the melody and the lyrics. And really filled out the story of a town, all in a single tune.
As for harmony choice - well done. The I-iii-IV-vi is beautiful but sad - and then you hit us with a IV-vi, IV-vi chorus. Makes me really worry about the town of River Crossing, and feel for them, too.

It's a tribute to your songwriting that I can enjoy this song, even though I have never heard of River Crossing and have no idea who Roland is and what "ka-tet" means. (You've been sending me to Google a lot this afternoon!) You have a melodious soothing vocal and a nice touch with the instrumentation.

Really loved the folky feel of this and the story you have created here. Thank you for sharing. :)
