Cool Spikey Hair

by @lbrewington

Liner Notes

Watched a lot of MTV and VH1 when they first started broadcasting and throughout my child hood. The music videos just went a little harder back then. It seemed like those guys were on top of the world until they weren't but we got to here it all eventually on Behind the Music (or maybe even a pop up video).

Hey, Lee - I’ve listened to this one a few times since the #songsidekick session. I like the way the chorus feels so sitting on the dock of the bay sing-along smooth, but the song holds this complicated mix of envy and disdain. I noticed in the typed lyrics you used “white spiky hair” and I’m interested in all the different adjectives that could slide in change the feel of the phrase: white, cool, blue, pink - they’re all stressed the same but the vowels sing so different in that spot.

Love how it gets more and more ironic/sarcastic as it moves along, the repeated line taking on a deeper meaning as the dark side behind the cool spikey hair is revealed!

I really love how you many associations the narrator has with this hairstyle—something that seems like it could be such a small detail. Really catchy and makes me think about what physical traits I've tried to cultivate over the years because of what I unconsciously associate with them.

Catchy melody and super imagery. I can't think of a better use of an anthemic chord progression. This makes me think of the still touring hair bands on 80's and 90's MTV.
