Happy FAWM 2025 everyone! I'm Kait (they/she) the Geeky Soprano, this is my 13th year of participating in FAWM, previously as “ekunyi”! My solo music is best described as #filk: #acoustic and #folk style songs that explore fantasy, science-fiction, and other general stuff you'll hear at a geeky con full of delightful nerds. I also participate in Familiar, a duo with my spouse Aaron, where we create prog rock and folk inspired music, some of which is filk-esque in nature, and other songs that lean more into the math-rock, proggy side of things.
Personal influences are mostly filk artists (ex. Alexander James Adams, S.J. Tucker, Heather Dale, Tricky Pixie) and folky #singer_songwriter music (ex. Dar Williams, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, and Ani DiFranco). Also quite a few FAWMers, some of whom I've been privileged to meet over the years!
The last two years have been a bit of a roller coaster, with massive life transitions, caring for sick family members, and a bit of burnout as a therapist. Thankfully I’m coming back this year remembering how important this tradition is to me, and I’m grateful to have the capacity for it again.
A few other fun facts:
1.) After studying voice in highschool and college, I resumed voice lessons in my mid-30s in 2021, which have been incredibly helpful for navigating the ways that some of my chronic inflammatory health issues impacts my ability to sing at times.
2.) I am a neurodivergent human (AuDHDer) who is #queer and #nonbinary, and who works as a therapist serving other queer, neurodivergent folx! These facets of my identity do inspire the way I move through the world, and inspire my music in kind.
3.) Some of my primary interests include: Egyptian mythology, animals of all sorts, Star Trek, and LGBTQ+ inspired cartoons like Steven Universe!
