Plausible Denial

Liner Notes

The seed of this song was from an early February "sketch" session. Listening back to these ideas, the trumpet sparked my interest so we set about making a full song out of it. Vocals took a bit to get going on this one, not sure they are still quite there yet - the energy comes later in the song, but it's too late in the day to revisit when there are more songs to get finished. I think I enjoy the later section of the song where we had fun recording the call and response parts.

Interestingly, with the song about not wanting to hear incriminating evidence (inspired by binge watching the Recruit on Netflix), the chorus chords spell "DEAF#" (and the verse ones DEAD). Not planned, just a happy accident.

On mixing down I couldn't help but add a line disconnected sample courtesy of BBC Sound Library. It's a great (free) resource for non-commercial stuff. You'll find all your favourite Archers sound effects in there!

Lyrics

VERSE 1
Whenever you take the call
That’s when you take the fall
Try Keeping it to yourself
Try telling somebody/one else
Because it's easier for me to never know

CHORUS
I don’t wanna take (you’ve really got to take my call)
I don’t wanna take (you’ve really got to take my call)
I don’t wanna take (you’ve really got to take my call)
I don’t wanna take your call

VERSE 2
I don’t want to be involved
(just) Make sure you get it solved
This ones on you to fix
Don’t make me complicit
Because it’s easier for me to deny it all

VERSE 3
Plausible denial
It’s how I avoid the fall
You’re not gonna make me fold
I’m deaf to what I’m told
Because it’s easier for me to never know at all

VERSE 4
Don’t leave a paper trail
Don’t send me an email
I stay above it all
I never take your call
Because it’s easier for us to never talk at all

MIDDLE 8
I Deny all knowledge
Of the things that happen out in the field
What you do to achieve our goals
I’m grateful, but I don’t want to know
So don’t take it personally

That call response chorus is cool. I dig the variation in the outro.

I love this. Your call and response at the end is very cool and catchy. I’m reminded of English Beat with your style. Love the subtle horns. And the recorded operator at the start is clever as well. Also congrats on 20 years! Class of 06 here too!
