We're Not Great (That's Not Bad)

Liner Notes

This is a song about songwriting disguised as a relationship song.

I was listening to an interview with a songwriter who said something along the lines of "there are songwriters who walk around feeling pretty good about writing a good song every day. But the problem is they are just good. Not great." And I felt bad about that because I did feel good about writing a song every day. But then I thought, "you know what? I DO feel GOOD about that." And that's great. Good can be good.

Lyrics

We fight
you yell
I hide
I wonder if things will ever be the same

Maybe things could be a whole lot better

Maybe what we have isn't great
and maybe that's not that bad
I'm feeling pretty good about the good we have

You're there
I'm here
we try
I'm happy to take it day by day

Maybe things could be a little bit better

Maybe what we have isn't great
and maybe that's not that bad
I'm feeling pretty good about the good we have

We keep on keeping on
We keep on keeping on
We keep on keeping on
We keep on keeping on

Maybe what we have isn't great
and maybe that's not that bad
I'm feeling pretty good about the good we have
I'm feeling pretty good about the good we have

I didn't read the liner notes before listening to this song, and I definitely thought it was about a relationship with a person. It's a complex interpersonal concept but certainly very relatable and well expressed. Now that I see you're also going for a second meaning (song writing), I like it even more. It fits well with one of the skirmishes earlier this month that was about our relationship with song writing.
