Liner Notes

Today I’m protecting my voice, but that lets me concentrate on the lyrical themes. Here I’ve thrown together the mental confusion over love and music, the way they really might go together in a musician’s stream of consciousness. I didn’t think of this while I was writing, but Todd Rundgren is known for this kind of whole-song metaphor.

Lyrics

Give me one more chance to play this solo
All the other takes were a no go
It’s like a story that won’t go together (so)
Don’t go crazy just go back to zero

I might be playing
On the wrong track
Forget I said a thing
Let me walk it all back
Wrong track and
I won’t try to explain
Wrong track and
The wrong train

See I always thought we would go together
But to say where we stand would take forever
Nothing to go on and I’ve tried for so long
Not quite the player who can play this song

I might be playing
On the wrong track
Forget I said a thing
Let me walk it all back
Wrong track and
I won’t try to explain
Wrong track and
The wrong train

You know how I like to play detective
But music and love are so subjective
You get it all down and then you’ve got it all wrong
It’s like the love notes are the notes of the song

I might be playing
On the wrong track
Forget I said a thing
Let me walk it all back
Wrong track and
I won’t try to explain
Wrong track and
The wrong train

Very strong lyrics, singing from the screen. I like how you used the wrong for your images and meanings. I hope to hear them.

This is a strong lyric and I like the way you've gone with the whole song metaphor, the third verse in particular really lands hard. Splendid write 😊

I love the contrast in the structure between the verses and chorus and like how your verses develop the insights that lead to that strong catchy feeling and relatable chorus that sings off the page.

The train/music track idea is a good one and this is great skirmishing!

Like the idea of train/music track for this -- and esp. love the verse that begins "you know how...". For me, these lyrics have a strong feel, of need and regret and a kind of desperation to try anything to start over or at least go back in time a bit.

@winchperry Yes, please go ahead with whatever music you can dream up. In this case, I actually have no musical suggestions to offer.

Very good write. Make a good country song, with the cool singer being all maudlin over his career and love life.

This is clever and snappy! Are you open to a callab? Can I try writing music for it? Since you say you are saving your voice, perhaps you have already written the melody but just didn't want to record it.
