I'm releasing this for World Day of Social Justice. There is much I can take for granted as a white, wealthy woman. Too much. That said, as a #queer person, there are other kinds of privilege that I lack. I am currently being confronted with just how much that is the case, as I find myself needing to flee my own country, hopefully one step ahead of losing everything.
Perhaps one day we will all walk this world with the privilege everyone deserves.
This was originally written for the 'You have the right to be wrong (sometimes)' skirmish, but it got out of hand, so it's no longer skirmish material.
Lyrics
For Granted
Jemma Kline
I see the lights behind me as rain is pouring down;
Perhaps I shouldn’t drive so fast beside a sleepy town.
A look into my window, a flashlight in my eyes;
Will the policeman see the secrets that I carry deep inside?
But my skin is white.
I don’t look odd.
My clothes are nice.
So he simply nods,
And I will get to keep my freedom for today.
I see a line is forming as I reach the airport gate;
Security is matching up each passport with a face.
The guard looks through my document, then at me standing there;
I hope he doesn’t know my heart is pounding at his careful stare.
But my skin is white.
I don’t look odd.
My clothes are nice.
So he simply nods,
And I will get to keep my freedom for today.
Though many times I’ve broken laws,
Though many times I’ve lied,
The courts will never punish me,
For I’m born rich and white
But my skin is white.
I don’t look odd.
My clothes are nice.
So they simply nod,
And I will get to keep my freedom for today.
