Lyrics

Verse One:

When I was young my family
Vacationed at the shore
Alone one night along the beach
I started to explore
I heard a haunting melody
Above the ocean’s roar
She winked at me and swam away
And that was when I swore (that I’d go)

Chorus:

Looking for the mermaid
I still can see her face
Looking for the mermaid
Her magic and her grace
Looking for the mermaid
No time for me to rest
Looking for the mermaid
I’ll never stop my quest

Verse Two:

Since that day I’ve spent my life
Atop the seven seas
I’ve searched around Point Nemo
And the waters of Belize
I’ve crossed the Mediterranean
From Athens to Cadiz
I thought I’d get to see her
But there are no guarantees (so I keep)

[repeat chorus]

Bridge:

No one can understand why I persist
They try to tell me mermaids don’t exist
Sometimes I hear them singing, each to each
Their song is always just beyond my reach (that’s why I’m)

[repeat chorus]

I was immediately struck by your choice of the word “shore”; as a non-native Philadelphian, I have always been perplexed by people here referring to going “down the shore” in New Jersey. It’s not called going to the beach here, unless you are AT the beach itself. Of course, your rhymes needed the shore, so you can explore and hear the roar, but I had to comment on that point! I really enjoy the whimsy of this mermaid story “down the shore”. ;) I hope this one finds her music.

Great storytelling, theme and rhymes. It all goes together very nicely. "No one can understand why I persist" - I understand bro. I really do.

I love mermaid songs! This is really great story telling here. I like the use of repetition in your chorus with the repeating title line. You could do a cool call and response here, maybe make it kind of magical like mermaids. I also like the references to music in the lyrics.
Please tag me if a collaborator adds music - I would love to hear it!
