So, I wrote this title down in November. The original idea was to write a song about Kamala and what she does with herself now. But as i fleshed it out this week, it evolved into more about people in my own life dealing with the aftermath of loss and grief. In a way both subjects are about devastating aftermaths, and what to do next.

Lyrics

She pours a drink and gazed outside
Leaning on the sink she questioned why
The sun was low in the western sky
The answers came and she changed her mind

Wondered If she ought to stay
Wondered what her mother would say
Went out the door to take a walk
Called a friend but she couldn’t talk
Refrain
She’d done the best she could do for them
All you could ask from her or him
As the sun went down the hill
She thought of all the dreams yet to be filled.

Sometimes there’s something in the gold sunset
Something she needed but hadn’t learned yet
Every evening she’d walk straight into it
Hoping this time there’d be no regrets
Refrain

I feel like this song could get you a record deal for a label looking for some great singer-songwriters who sing as well as they write songs. Your voice and guitar playing on this song jumped out me immediately as being super strong, natural and confident. And of course the liner notes reflecting on Kamala for inspiration caught my eye right away, as that topic would for many. As I listened to the song, I know that it goes even further out there than just for one specific person and a singular situation. This song speaks to all people who have endured a great loss and are looking for direction in their next chapter.

I've gotta Zong-bust this thing! Man, what a devastating loss that was for all of us. I still wonder what all she felt. I like that you made this more universal though and created something for the listener to fill in the gaps with something that they can relate to or picture someone in a similar situation. I like the optimism in the song. "sometimes there's something in the gold sunset/something she needed but hadn't learned yet." The title Lady at Sunset reminds me of a still life photograph or painting, yet this song has momentum with that catchy riff. Really nice.
