River of Ice
Liner Notes
My husband suggested "River of Ice" as a prompt.
We were in Quebec City recently where the St. Lawrence is full of ice floes, a ferry that plows through them to the other side, and some crazy individuals practicing for a "canoe race" across--mostly running across the floes carrying the canoe and pausing when they reached open water.
I have been feeling adrift this winter, so the metaphor feels apt.
Lyrics
River of Ice
I’m walking a river of ice
Going where no one should go
I don’t know how I got here
Going with the flow
When the tide comes in
Pushes the floes upstream
I, too, fight the drift
Trying to find my dream
Pushed by wind and current
Ice sheets overlap and stack
Or suddenly pull apart
Revealing water cold, dark, black
If I took the ferry, crossing shore to shore
Life would be predictable, but there could be more
When the tide goes out
Pulling the ice to the sea
Far beyond the horizon
Where I’ll end up eventually
I’m walking a river of ice
Going where no one should go
I don’t know how I got here
I’m going with the flow
Guess I’ll go with the flow
