In the Stars Tonight

Liner Notes

Thinking about how The Lion King is 30 years old, and how old that makes me!

Lyrics

G D Em7
You said one day that I would be the king,
C G
Ruling all the light touches,
C D
In the circle of living.
But you are gone, and I feel so alone,
A self made tragic ending,
C D7 G
To the dreams that I had known.

G C D
Are you in the stars tonight?
C G
Looking down on me,
Am D
In their twinkling light
G Bm
Because I don’t know who I am
C
Without you here,
D G
There’s only fear

I fled my home with blood upon my paws,
All that I’d ever known,
Is now lost and flown,
There’s nothing for me now in my own land,
Only death and shame will follow,
If I try to make a stand.

Can I turn and claim what I once thought was mine,
Do I have the strength and courage,
To turn the sands of time,
There are others who are crying to be free,
But I cannot bear the burden,
I can barely carry me.

What a gorgeous retelling! If there is ever a another remake, this song should be in the play or movie. The last line really got me.

Maybe I should see this someday; your lovely song makes it tempting. Even without knowing more of the story than I've got from cultural osmosis, the song gives a good sense of the character's journey.

Yes, I cried in the theater watching “The Lion King.” It means so much to me. Beautiful tribute!
