Under the Rug

Liner Notes

Half of the songs these days seem to be very specifically lyric driven, and half of them are of the 'find words that sit on the line of best fit' variety. This one is the latter. #piano #acoustic #singersongwriter

Lyrics

Sweep under the rug
Sweep under the rug
Sweep away your worries
Your thoughts and your prayers
Your desires and your cares
’Til they’re gone

Sweep under the rug
Sweep under the rug
Sweep away the weight of the ocean
Your petty misfortune
And every new dawn

Don’t tell the tide
Not to let go
Don’t tell the hurricane butterfly zephyr
Which way it should blow
Don’t tell the moon
It’s not real light
Don’t tell the preening miraculous sun
It’ll never feel night

Sweep under the rug
Sweep under the rug
Sweep away your pity and guilt
With the mud and the silt
Of the things that you’ve done

Sweep under the rug
Sweep under the rug
Sweep away the lies that you told
Bills of goods that you sold
Just to say, say that you’d won

Don’t tell the tide
Not to let go
Don’t tell the hurricane butterfly zephyr
Which way it should blow
Don’t tell the moon
It’s not real light
Don’t tell the preening miraculous sun
It’ll never feel night

Gonna charge by the word
Gonna charge by the note
Gonna charge by the minute
Each moment we wrote
Gonna charge by the word
Gonna charge by the note
Gonna charge by the minute
And that’s all that she wrote

Don’t tell the tide
Not to let go
Don’t tell the hurricane butterfly zephyr
Which way it should blow
Don’t tell the moon
It don’t know how to shine
Don’t tell the dog star in all of its kindness
That you will be fine

Bass and piano sit really well together. Nice harmonies on the vocals and the lyrics certainly fit well with plenty of catchy hooks.

very very cool tune! kinda has some spots that remind me of Jesus Christ Superstar ... I think the descending line at the end of the verses?
Notes of classical, latin jazz... but still a bit grungy ... and love your voice!
Favorite lyrical section
"Gonna charge by the word
Gonna charge by the note
Gonna charge by the minute
Each moment we wrote"
So glad I stumbled upon a fellow pianist! Really cool stuff!

ooh I really dig this. the repetition throughout, how it sounds like it could be performed at 1am at a smokey jazz club.

I like the rhythm to this, slinky and danceable - a tango? Cool imagery you hung on this track, too, and that title line sits perfectly.
