His Golden Heart

Challenge: Response Song

Liner Notes

Weekly challenge of writing a response song. I have always been a fan of Paul Simon (who is not?) and would spin his records for hours, so this was the response of the character from "Diamonds On The Soles of Her Shoes". If I could ever capture even 1% of Paul Simon that would be a win for me.

Two hours from sitting down to final demo. Short song so threw in a instrumental section and played a second guitar part, could extend that section for a longer solo.

Lyrics

c f g

he's just a poor boy with a heart of gold

and sometimes i wonder if only sees these diamonds

with his heart of gold

i may be uptown
and everybody knows

but i try to downplay these diamonds i own

[chorus]
c f g c
and oooooo everybody thinks it for the love of gold
f g c
and not the lining of his golden heart
f g c
not the joy his smile will bring
f g c
it's his heart of gold

f g

there's just something about that boys blues eyes

that pulls me into the city at night

we don't have to do very much

i could spend all night staring in his soul

and basking in the light of his heart of gold

[chorus]

It can be tricky to build a song around an explanation, but this strikes a good balance, making the point while keeping things light. There is some sparkle in the music for sure.

Nice! It's got a similar energy without being too close, and a POV switch is a classic choice.

Sweet! Love the bouncy groove and the exuberant guitar and voice. You took that inspiration and created a winner of a song!
