Spectre

Liner Notes

On the 16th of August I went to watch a Ween / Weezer tribute band playing at the Corner Hotel in Richmond. They played Weezer Blue and Ween's Chocolate & Cheese in their entireties, with some guest musicians. Not knowing any songs from either band, I felt the music was completely foreign to me.

The one saving grace for the night (and the entire reason I showed up) was when Damian Cowell of TISM came up towards the end and sang "Ocean Man" and "Even if You Don't", both by Ween. Laura Imbruglia joined him on the latter song.

For the rest of the night I just scrolled on my phone.

In addition, I started feeling a bit upset because I recognised a girl who blocked me, she was in the audience up the front that night. She was only present during the first set (the band played Ween's album); and I didn't see her after that.

In the song Damian is referred to as "Humphrey" because his stage name in TISM is Humphrey B. Flaubert.

This was recorded on my phone on the 23rd of August, recorded in one take. I sang and played guitar.

Lyrics

I saw a band play Weezer and Ween
Not knowing the songs or what they mean
Felt foreign, the music was too loud
I was just a face in the crowd

Swimming through a large sea of people
It felt like a waste of time and money
I sat on a chair scrolling on my phone
I couldn't relate to the material

Deepest wish to erase myself
And sink into the ground
I think I'm kept on a shelf
Silent spectre against the sound

Matched with a girl on Hinge, she ghosted me
I found her Instagram and she blocked me
I saw her up the front in the audience
Oh, what a strange coincidence

I felt awkward when I recognised her
She was dancing to the music
And an hour later she left
No change in behaviour

Deepest wish to erase myself
And sink into the ground
I think I'm kept on a shelf
Silent spectre against the sound

The one bit I liked was when Humphrey came on
And he sang a couple of Ween songs
Even though that's all I got out of it
I felt the wait was far too long
