Picking at Your Nails

by @edwardsmusic

Liner Notes

The initial idea for this song came from when I complained to an old mentor in 2018 about dead skin on my fingers, likely coming from picking at my fingernails. Another mentor said, "Not a bad name for a song, picking at your nails".

This song was bashed out quite quickly (around 20 minutes). I wrote down a few pairs of lyrics on my phone, and then sat in the back room at the Sol Green Community Centre (South Melbourne) playing an acoustic guitar.

This was written and recorded on the 24th of July. I recorded this on my phone in one take.

Lyrics

Sometimes I like to pick at my nails
When they grow a bit too long
You might think I'm off the rails
Since I wrote this song

Gives me the feeling
Picking at my skin
Some kind of satisfaction
Leaving residue on the floor
Leaves me wanting more and more

It's getting hard to play guitar
Nails get in the way of the fretboard
Trimming my nails in a shoddy way
Makes it easier to play some more

Sometimes I like to pick at my nails
When they grow a bit too long
You might think I'm off the rails
Since I wrote this song

I like the guitar. Gives it an edginess personifying the tension that reinforces the idea of picking at one's nails.
